"Every now and then I get the inspiration to work with the powerful and transformative energy of Goddess Pele. It is said that when Pele arrived in Hawaii, she first used her Pa’oa, or o’o stick on Kauai to strike deep into the earth. She dug “fire pits,” on Oahu including the crater we now call Diamond Head. After that, she left her mark on the island of Molokai before traveling to Maui and creating the Haleakala Volcano.
My intention for this painting is to embody the spirit of being broken open, exposed and made vulnerable by fierce love. She is digging into the heart and soul of the earth to release and transmute old ways of being and thinking that no longer serve us. She is allowing and encouraging the lava to flow which will create the earth that will provide a new path for us to walk. Her gesture is saying let the past burn so that we may rise into an empowered present and future."
